Cinemagr.am

I’m pretty sure we’ve all heard of Instagram.  Is anyone else as addicted to it as I am?  Seriously.  I can’t stop taking pictures!  I love it!  My favorite part is the social aspect of it.  I learn more about my blog and twitter friends not only from their words but I get a little peek into their world through pictures.  I love to share pictures from my life, too.  It’s like visual twitter  And, bonus…I can post it to Twitter!  :-)

Last week one of my facebook friends posted a picture on facebook from an app I had never heard of and I was very curious.  I clicked the picture and found that it was called Cinemagr.am.  The set up of the app is very similar to Instagram except that this app lets you animate the pictures.  So fun!  Of course, Instagram will always be my first love, but sometimes it’s fun to have a little motion in your pictures.

I tried out a few examples to give you an idea of what you can do with this app.

Candle

the candle flames are on a repetitive loop.

Flower

One of the two flowers is blowing in the wind.  I love how this one looks!

Stream

Only the waterfall is moving.  The rest of the water is completely still.

Bo

Sometimes Bo gets tired of me taking his picture all the time.  If he doesn’t want his picture taken he won’t look at me.  This day my dad was talking to him and I called his name.

As you can probably tell I have been having a lot of fun with this app for the past week.

Some of the things I like about this app

  • It’s an easy way to make an animated picture on the go (or if you’re like me and you don’t know how to do this in Photoshop).
  • I like the social network-y part of it.  As I said before the layout of the  app is very similar to Instagram.
  • You can add fun filters to your picture before you post it (also similar to my favorite Instagram).
  • You can share your Cinemagrams on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.  Perfect for getting the picture out to everyone to enjoy.  :-)

Things that could be imrpoved

  • It would be extremely helpful to be able to adjust the brush size when highliting the sections for the app to animate.  If you look closely at some of these you will see where my highlighting overlapped beyond the item I wanted to animate.
  • No iPad app?  Maybe some day.  I tried to use the iPhone version on my iPad to make it a little easier to highlight the animated sections with a larger screen but it crashed when I got to the filters section of the app…every time!

Overall I think this is a great photography app if you are just using it for fun.  If you download it you should browse through some of the other Cinemagrams posted by users.  Some of them are really awesome and some will just make you laugh because they are so silly!

If you decide to try out the app let me know so I can check out your pictures.

Question of the Week – #3

This week something very unexpected happened to me.  I was having a stressful day on Tuesday so I decided to stop at Starbucks for a frappuccino treat.  I went through the drive through because the line was short and I was in a hurry.  I ordered and pulled up to the window to pay.  The cashier told me to keep my card because the person two cars in front of me bought the coffee for me and the car in front of me.  Isn’t that awesome??

This instantly made me want to do something nice for someone else.  There wasn’t anyone in line behind me so I’ll have to wait to pay it forward until the next time I go for coffee.  :-)  It’s pretty amazing how one small act of kindness can turn someone’s day around.  I stopped thinking about how stressed out I was feeling and just thought about how nice it was that someone I didn’t even know would be so kind.

This leads me to the question of the week.

I’m going to do my best to seek out situations where I can perform random acts of kindness in my day-to-day life from now on.  I want everyone to be able to experience the happiness it brought me this week.  I challenge you to do the same.  :-)

Evernote

Click here for more information about Evernote or to download the app…if you haven’t already.  😉

Thank you to Jinny from Lip Glosserie for reminding me about this app.  I’ve had Evernote on my phone for a long time but never really used it.  I made a couple craft supply shopping lists but that was it.  Now that I have an iPad it’s much easier to work with and I’m writing notes for everything!

Hmm…I think its time to go write some more notes!

Have a great day!

Question of the Week – #2

Yesterday I took a little break from my crazy week to play around with my new iPad (this thing is awesome!) and read a few articles on Flipboard.  That’s where I came across this awesome quote.  It actually comes from the article What It Means To Be a Geek from The Mary Sue.

I read this quote and thought to myself, “Yep! I’m a geek!”  I started thinking of all the things I geek out about just like the quote says and the list was long.  Just off the top of my head I thought of this list…and I’m just getting started!  😉  When I like things I am pretty passionate about them.

Oh!   I can’t forget Joss Whedon.  I always geek out for something Joss Whedon works on.

Oh yeah.  Did I mention musicals?  😉

This leads me to my question of the week…

What is that one thing (or things) that makes you so happy that you “geek out”?  I can’t wait to hear the answers to this one.  It’s fun to learn about people by what they enjoy.

p.s.  Did you notice that I used the same font for my question as they use for the credits on Firefly (and Eureka…this is a problem for me…they shouldn’t share fonts!)?  Have I mentioned that I like Joss Whedon?  Hehe!  :-)

Question of the Week – #1

I’ve learned so much and gotten to know some awesome people since I started my blog a couple years ago.  This community is filled with such interesting and talented people.  You guys are fun!  Yesterday I posted a question on Instagram and was very excited to see some great responses.  I want to read more!

I love blogs that create discussion and let the reader be more of a participant.  I want that to happen here.  So I have an idea.  For the next few weeks I’m going to post a question for you to answer on Fridays.  Some of them will be silly questions just for fun and some will be more thoughtful.  I’ll post my answer along with some of yours the following Friday with another question for you to answer.  If it catches on I’ll keep it going.  If not, don’t worry.  I have lots of fun ideas coming to the blog soon.  :-)

Let’s get started!

The first question is a big one.  It’s something I have been thinking a lot about over the past year since I started Dreaming in Craft.  I’m interested to read the answers to this one.  :-)

Now it’s your turn.  Just leave your answer in the comments.

Stop Motion Studio Pro HD

If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter or Facebook then you know I love posting pictures.  I am addicted to photography apps on my phone!  I love all the fun borders, collages and filters.  It makes me happy!  :-)  Since I love stop motion just as much as I love taking pictures I decided to do a little search for stop motion apps.  Believe it or not there actually are a few.  Of course we’re talking about phone apps for making stop motion videos so these are purely for fun and not necessarily for making a quality stop motion animation.  I’m okay with that.  I just want to play around anyway.  I’ll get down to the real stop motion making once my big idea comes to me.

The first app I downloaded was called Stop Motion Studio Pro HD.

I made this short animation with some of the magnetic letters I had left over from my days working in early childhood classrooms.  I didn’t realize it was going to be so short!

Stop Motion Studio Pro HD Test from Marci Peterson on Vimeo.

It turned out okay.  It has some limitations, but if your just using the app for fun it’s pretty good.

There were a few things that I would like to see improved.

  • All pictures have to be taken with the app.  Existing photos taken with a camera or phone cannot be used.
  • Pictures have to be taken in the order they are used.  For example, if I wanted to start the stop motion and end it the same way I would have to retake the pictures at the end instead of just repeating the pictures from the beginning.
  • Music only plays from the beginning of a song.  You can’t choose a section of a song that you prefer.  It makes it a lot harder to find a song that will work.
  • Picture quality isn’t great.  I can get way better pictures on my phone with almost every other app I have used.  If I could at least edit the pictures I would be happier.
  • You can’t choose the speed of the picture changes.  I would have like to slow down the changes for picture that I wanted to stay on the screen for longer instead of having to take the same picture 5 times.  Another solution for this would be using a picture more than once as I mentioned in my comment above.

Besides being fun to play with, there were a couple of things I liked about the app.

  • There is a frame count so I can keep track of the number of pictures I took for each frame.  This is helpful if you need to take any number of the same picture in a row.
  • You can set the camera to take a picture at certain increments of time.  This is helpful so you have time to set up the shot.   It’s also nice if you can prop your camera up so you only have to worry about setting up the picture.
  • The grid is very helpful since I don’t have any kind of tripod for my phone and can’t use pictures from somewhere else (did I mention that this bugs me? ;-)).  It helped me keep the pictures a little more steady.  It’s not perfect but I think the shakiness gives it a cute stop motion feel.  :-)
  • The app only costs $0.99!  Not bad at all.

I’ll keep the app on my phone so I can play around with it some more.  I found a few more stop motion apps that I’m excited to try out soon.  I’ll let you know what I think.

Have you tried this app?  I would love to hear what you thought about it.

Let’s Create! Pottery

This weekend a friend came to visit and she told me about an iPhone app called Let’s Create!  Pottery.  I love it because I get to do something creative while I’m playing games.
In this app you make pottery.
Fire it
Decorate it
And sell it to make money to buy fun new colors and decorations.
You can also do challenges where they give you a picture of a piece of pottery and you have to try to match it.  It’s harder than you might think.
There are three different versions of the game so it’s perfect for any budget.  You can start with the free version and work your way up so the game stays new and fun!
Aren’t these awesome?  I found them on the Pottery Community website.  You can submit pictures of your pottery there.  They even have contests where you can win prizes!
I’m off to create some more pottery.  Have a great day!

Little Printer

Have you heard of Little Printer?  I just saw it yesterday on Pinterest.  It is so cute!
This is a little printer made by BERG Cloud that links up to an app on your iPhone or Android phone and prints a tiny newspaper on receipt paper for you.  You subscribe to the things you’re interested in and get a happy little newspaper.  :-)  You can print reminders for yourself like birthdays from contacts or to do lists.  You can also print news you are interested in and fun puzzles!  It even links up with your foursquare account so you can visit the places your friends like.  There are so many fun things you can add to your tiny newspaper.
This product will be released some time in 2012. I hope it’s affordable because I would love to have one to play with.
I love discovering fun new apps and gadgets for my iPhone.  Have you found any cool new apps recently?
